Great Barrier Reef - cruises and tours

By Alan

The Great Barrier Reef is arguably the greatest natural wonder on the planet; it lies just off the coast of tropical North Queensland. It marine species are numbered at least 10,000 different varieties, there are over three hundred islands of different sizes as well as the stunning mainland coastline that includes city’s such as Cairns.

With all this massive amount of things to see and do along its 2300km stretch the GBR offers a huge variety of tours and cruise options for any visitor to enjoy. Many dive enthusiasts go for a three or four day dive and cruise package that stops off a few times a day to let you dive in different and exiting locations as you make your way from one attractive stopover location to another.

You can also hire a boat or join a cruise that will take you around some of the 300 islands that are to be found along the reef. These can be pre- packaged routes with stopovers at some of the most interesting points on the reef or a sail where the wind takes us laid back cruise of your choice.

There are longer cruises that can take you the full length of the reef to enjoy absolutely everything there is to see along the route, and enjoy the extreme luxury of the small cruise ships that sail these waters. You will visit some of the larger islands such as Lord Howe Island, Heron Island and Lady Elliot Island and the Whitsundays archipelago.

There are also many day trip type cruises that can take you out to little islands or to specific dive or fishing spots to let you spend a day relaxing and enjoying the crystal clear Pacific waters.

Don’t forget there is a lot to do on dry land with adventures such as gliding over the Atherton Tablelands in a Hot Air Balloon. You can also enjoy the magnificence of the stunning rainforests and venture to Cape Tribulation and Bloomfield Falls and if you don’t want to escape the water, you could take a cruise along the Daintree River.

There are other wonders just away from the Oceanside cities such as Paronella Park and Lake Barrine, there are four-wheeler tours, and helicopter rides to give you a different view of the coastline and interior.

There are also many other tours to tourist attractions such as Kuranda Wildlife Experience, the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway as well as tours to more remote areas and far away desert island beaches.
The reef area has so much to offer in terms of cruises and tours it is impossible to take it all in, the hardest choice is what to leave out.
